Volunteer at Sefu Community Learning Centre in Kathmandu, Nepal


SEFU is an entirely volunteer based non-governmental, non-profit making and social development organisation. SEFU is involved in the activities of social development aiming to provide socio-economic enhancement to marginalised and rural people with special focus on the empowerment of women and low caste groups. SEFU mainly works in rural and remote areas of different regions and sectors of the kingdom, in diversified field like drinking water and sanitation, poverty reduction, environmental conservation and forest management, non-formal education for different category of participants, health and HIV/AIDS awareness and preventive activities, children’s education and community learning center (CLC) programmes and advocacy and net-working with the organisations on common issues. SEFU has developed Community Learning Centre, Community Children’s Library and the Mahankal Primary School in order to provide an education facilities and other community needs to the people of Lalitpur area with hopes of improving illiteracy and student development. They also work with over 12 other government schools within the Kathmandu Valley (both rural and urban locations). SEFU also conducts non-formal education programs and skill-oriented training at various communities to promote organization and active involvement of local people. Programmes on tailoring, knitting, Mithila art, bamboo products recently provided to 75 young people with a new sense of self esteem and more importantly income. Volunteers can help on a number of levels to increase awareness of such programs and encourange more people to attend the programs being offered to them. They can also help teach the local teachers and volunteers and assist in developing new projects.

Volunteer can assist with the following Tasks:

 Assist teachers or teach your own classroom in a number of different small community schools. Teach non-formal English classes at the library or learning center. Assist local volunteers and staff with developing new classes, training, and programs. Run reading clubs and seminars at the community library. Help to develop awareness literature. Teacher training.
