Africa Vacation-Ngorongoro Crater


Africa, normally referred to the ‘ Dark Continent’ is an awesome continent. Endowed with plenty of natural resources ranging from minerals, forests, people, wildlife, lakes and cultures. To the North its more dry and desert like, within the tropics is tropical climate and rainforests and to the south, desert and plains.

East and Southern Africa is edowed with plenty of wildlife living in the wild. An Africa vacations takes you to world’s greatest spectacles with The Wildebeest migration and Ngorongoro Crater heading the list.  Ngorongoro Crater  is located within the Ngorongoro Conservation area in Tanzania and forms part of the Serengeti ecosystem which extends northwards to Kenya where it borders Masai Mara. The Crater is the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera in the world, 19.2 Kilometres in diameter, 610 metres deep and 304 sq kilometers in area.

It is home to uncountable wildlife, predominantly grazing animals like the wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, eland, warthog and kongoni. The swamps and forests provide additional habitats for the hippos, elephant, water buck, reedbuck, bushbuck, baboons and vervet monkeys. Predators like the lion, leopard, cheetah, serval cats and hyenas live off the large numbers of wildlife within the crater. Within the conservation area is also the masai who have lived in harmony with the wildlife and their cattle due to their traditional lifestyle. They are allowed to take their animals into the crater for water and grazing, but not to live or cultivate there.

Ngorongoro Crater can be accessed via a road from Arusha town to the Crater gate. Arusha town has Kilimanjaro International Airport connecting it to the outside world. With frequent international airines landing from Europe, Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam.

Its is managed by Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. Subsequently awarded World Heritage site and International Biosphere Reserve Status. This has increased the numbers of visitors coming to the crater and also visiting the surrounding highlands. Beyond the Ngorongoro Crater are other crates that were formed around the same time but not as big one example are Oldonyo Lengai which is still active, Olmoti and Embakaai Craters to the north east, Laetoli, Oldeani and Oldupai Gorges. All these offer lots of adventure and fascination to the visitors.
