Adol Red has a pathological need for adventure. This enigmatic hero has been around a number of far-flung lands during the long tenure of Falcom’s Ys series and has established scores of monsters to the edge of his sword. Rather than a franchise that is built on extensive storytelling, Ys is built around hacking and cutting and not much else. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage, with the result that if you love a singular focus on splitting monsters and steal all their stuff will Ys Seven meet.

Assume the role of Adol, your adventure gets underway as you and a companion, Dogi, arrives in Altago City, a bustling port that has only recently earned the victory in a dispute with a neighbor. As outsiders, the two travelers are regarded with hostility and suspicion, like Dragon Knights, the city’s guardian force. The king has fortunately heard stories of Adol the Red and you will soon be asked to investigate some activities at a nearby ruin. For a figure of such international fame, is Adol Christin pretty much a blank slate. You do not get a feel for what he does besides kill monsters, travel, help random people with their problems and enjoy Dogi company. Nor do you get a sense of his history except that he is an adventurer, going on adventurous tales. Other characters are fleshed out with only the broadest strokes of narrative, enough to push the issue further without becoming strong individuals. There are a few dramatic twists to keep the urgency alive as all Altago fall into inevitable danger, but the story is just a basic scaffold around gameplay. It is somewhat unfortunate since you end up wanting to know more about the famous red hair completely. Setup can leave you feeling a little lost, especially if you have not played a Ys game before.
Adol Christin. Love the sea, his best friend Dogi, and cutting everything in sight.
You cross the territories of the kingdom through circuitous paths across the plains and mountains and through forests and deserts. Each area is filled with native wildlife that has been extremely rude to the locals, giving you ample chance to hone your blade. Your three party members each have a basic attack that you can hold a button to charge up a lot of special skills can be learned from weapons, and an ultimate attack that can be performed when an additional gauge is full. Smacking enemies around you earn skill points to refill a meter of where your special skills draw their power. As you clear your way through the wilderness or dungeons, you fall into a natural rhythm in mashing monsters skill points, unleashing your special skills to earn extra points and then hoarding your most powerful ability of your strongest foes. You can switch between any of your characters on the fly, which is useful as various characters can equip different weapons that inflict significant damage on certain monster types. If you are using a non-ideal bit of armament, your damage output is pathetic, so it’s obvious when you need to switch, even if you can not predict what species of monster.
Fight results in a cascade of coins, bones, horns, and other similar collectibles – and glory to put more creatures through a combined blender of Adol and friends is the big hook that drives exploration. There is a good mix of simple enemies that are fodder for the button-mashing meat grinder and powerful beings that requires you to skillfully employ your evade ability to skirt disaster. The real stars are Titano and other giant boss monsters that are hulking beasts that require quick evasions and wise use of your skill to defeat. It is not just a matter of hitting vulnerable spots or moving around projectiles, either; managers have different skills, and they trigger new strategies that you cut back on their health. To defeat them you should be able to adapt quickly, and it makes their deaths even more gratifying. The only problem with these marquee games is that managers have a tendency to be something cheap, chain projectiles and powerful land-based skills that can make it impossible to avoid getting hit hard when you have to go in and poke. Fortunately, you can take away a limited number of healing items that will quickly become your best mates, so getting juggled in the air by a convergence of ridiculous powers would not necessarily mean your doom. There are a few different AI settings for your friends, but mostly they seem to run around and do whatever the heck they want, which usually works.
Healing items, weapons, armor and accessories can be purchased or synthesized. As you travel through Altago, you earn all sorts of animal bits, leaves, fruits, ores and other materials used to make. Spending your money is always a workable solution, but ultimately the best weapons and armor in the game is created through synthesis. It is up to you how much crafting you want to do, and the game has a good job of flooding you with materials that you do not have to do too much in the way of hunting for rare toenail clippings. Some residents in the villages you come across offer you quests, and although these side tasks are not very involved, and can easily be skipped, they give a little more personality to the places you visit and a few nice rewards.

Character portraits bring voices to life personable, with a few changing expressions to communicate important feelings at the moment. 3D models are not beautiful, but get the job done, and there is a good assortment of monster types all throughout the game, so you’re not fighting the same slime in a different color all the time. Your special skills have punch without all the fancy and the ultimate extra abilities just enough flash to make them funny without slowing the action. While most of the game sites are standard grasslands, trees and sand, many of the later dungeons are a lot more visually interesting, with wind, water fountains, and even a few lasers. You’ll find a number of key elements that allow you to ride the lift, run across lava, and breathe underwater to facilitate your exploration without requiring a lot of backtracking. They are well placed in the dungeons that require them and are all useful to the end of the game, arriving after 20 to 30 hours of looting everything in sight. Energetic dungeon themes serve as great background sound for the length of your trip without grate.
It is a pity that the characters are not more fully fleshed out and the events hew as close to RPG cliché, but ultimately Ys Seven rests on the strength of its efforts. This is an old recipe for hack-and-slash enjoyment, and although it may be the most memorable or modern, there’s nothing to say to the grand, gigantic bosses wipe the floor with you. The satisfying parts of the gameplay still wears Ys formula well today, for new fans and old.
