Stockpile Area

Click on image to view some of the large stockpiles of demolished buildings, concrete and soil. 800 buildings have been demolished on the ADI site.

A State Government commissioned Independent Audit Report in 1999 has stated these stockpiles are free from contaminants and are suitable to be recycled yet asbestos was found in this area by ADI RAG on 29th January 2005. The asbestos find was filmed and shown by Channel Nine News.

Lend Lease has stated its intent to use these stockpiles for fill and other uses including road base.

Lend Lease previously claimed these stockpiles were clean fill, this was because the Site Audit validated them as clean fill. If ADI RAG had not blown the whistle then there would have been no re-assessment of these stockpiles. If asbestos is strewn throughout these piles then it would have been crushed up and spread back onto the site.

Lend Lease are now claiming that they will re-test the stockpiles for contaminants before it is re-used. These stockpiles contain millions of tons of material, this will be an exhaustive process and must abide by all standards stipulated by the  State Governments Environment Protection Authority. They must also monitor the entire process.
